Response to George M Review ” Motion Controls and why the gaming industry needs to get it out of their system”
I do disagree with one statement in your article which states that, “People play games to escape and to relax, making them pretend to play tennis or baseball is neither”.
People use video games to escape reality i agree however using motion… sensitive controls allows the player to be more involved with the world they are experienceing vicarously.
Look at Madworld on the Wii. it may have a terrible and predictible narrative however I still play it for the way it feels to control the character. It is a very good mix of motion control mixed with your standard ‘button bashing’ style of control which makes the character very easy to manipulate.
I can understand your agrument against casual gaming because it is destroying itself by not making the controls responsive enough. also currently with a large amount of video games characters actions rely on animation. When I press X the character will jump for example. however if a game is going to be completely motion sensitive everything else that helps create a world is going to be compremised due to the ‘Ragdoll’ style of programming required.
Casual gaming is needed to allow the motion control market to develop. which could mean one day we will have the Virtual Reality enviroments every gamer would love.
It is a means to an end, some times you need to bare with the awful games so that you can develop hardware that will allow people to experience the farfeached worlds in Final Fantasy etc. but until then. Motion control should be used to enhance the experience that your standard control gives you when playing a game, Not try to over rule it completely.
